EXPLORING THE COVENANT IN CHRIST
EXPLORING THE NEW COVENANT AGAINST FOUNDATIONAL POWERS (B)
REFERENCES: EXODUS 12: 12-13, JOSHUA 2, JOSHUA 6:16-25
Exploring means to look deeply into something in order to discover and get more out of it.
God is deeper than hell; His knowledge is deeper than the sea.
There is so much more to get in Him than what you already have. In order to get all in Christ, you explore the covenant.
This enables you to rise above the level of just being born again, and move into a deeper level in Christ.
This demands that you challenge your opinions and perceptions about the things you think you already know.
Ex 12:12-13
God had been working wonders in Egypt. At this juncture, He was going to work the work to end all controversies, to break the arrogant gods of the land, and bring His people out of captivity.
Before He did that, He told Moses, with assured confidence, ‘This shall be the beginning of months to you. I have been showing wonders, but what I am going to do now, will mark the end of captivity, and be the beginning of liberty. I have been giving signs, but there is one particular sign- one true sign- that I will now show. When I reveal it, it will mark the beginning of a new month- a new chapter- in your lives.’
For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgement: I am the LORD.
I am the LORD. I have the capacity- all it takes- to do all that I have said: to pass through the whole land, kill all the firstborns and punish the gods of the land.
And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
The blood shall be for a token or sign to you upon [the doorposts of] the houses where you are, [that] when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall be upon you to destroy you when I smite the land of Egypt [AMP]
He must see the blood.
I will execute judgement against the gods of Egypt, but before I do, release the blood.
The blood shall be for a sign, that you shall be delivered from the wrath to come.
Josh 2:1-21
And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho.
Consider this.
Joshua sent two men, just as Moses had sent him.
Jesus sent me, just as God had sent Him.
Moses had sent Joshua; and now, Joshua was sending these two.
Jesus said, as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. (Jn 20:21)
He had also been sent, by the Father. Now, He has sent me.
When Joshua was sent against the Amalekites, and the sun was going down before he could finish his assignment, he commanded it to stay until he was done. ‘sun, hold on till I finish my work’
He was confident that Moses had sent him, meaning that the God who sent Moses was right there with him. Therefore, if He who sent him also sent the sun, the sun was not permitted to work against him.
And so, he went up against Amalek and eliminated the enemy.
Now, he was sending two men to spy on Jericho.
And they went, and came into an harlot’s house, named Rahab, and lodged there.
Before the men came to lodge in the house of Rahab, there was something already lodging there. Harlotry was lodging in the house.
At their entrance however, a matter arose. Since they cannot lodge together, because they do not agree, one must leave for the other.
Brethren, I am called to enter your life. Therefore, whatever is not of God, that has been lodging in you, must go out.
And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country. And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring for the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house…
They took the news to the king because he was an authority in the land; and they desired him to use that authority to send out the two spies.
And the woman took the two men, and hid them and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were…
The two spies would not have gone on the mission unarmed, or unprepared to fight.
They would have fought and killed the men sent by the king.
However, Rahab decided that there was no need for them to fight; she would rather hide them.
When a true servant of God is going through something, and you decide to take care of the situation, you have simply done what Rahab did.
But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.
She did not just bring the men into her life; she did not just hide the men. She chose to set them on the roof, setting them as a cover over her life.
And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you. For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you…and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan…whom ye utterly destroyed.
Rahab did not consider advertising her trade to these men because she had seen something in them. She saw their terror. As she beheld their terror, the harlotry that once lodged in her life was evicted and cast out of her.
When you cannot see the presence- the terror- of God in a Christian, it would be easy to think immoral thoughts towards such. However, when you behold the terror of God in the life of His servant, every negative power or spirit in you will be dislodged.
And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
If men will see your terror, they must hear something. Something must happen for them to hear things that will terrify them about you.
The terror of Israel was so great in Jericho, that the city was shut up.
These men were not sent directly by God. They were sent by the man whom God sent. Yet, they were unstoppable; they went in.
Now therefore I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness that ye will also shew kindness unto my father’s house, and give me a true token (sign).
Rahab did not have what it took to hide and save these men. They had the capacity to defend themselves and eliminate the threat. Yet, because she had chosen to take the stress of them, the LORD allowed her.
Therefore, she could claim to have shown them kindness, and ask for a true sign.
Now, this means that there are signs, but there is one true sign.
When God gave Israel the true sign, breakthrough took place.
Other signs are inconsequential beside the true sign.
You may have heard prophecies or seen pictures of regression, sickness, death, failure, frustrations. These are signs, but they are not true signs.
The true sign can only come from the true God.
Rahab was not in Egypt, yet she had discovered that the Blood was the true sign- the key to Israel’s deliverance from captivity.
She was called a harlot, but she could testify that the evil that had once lodged in her body had been dislodged by their entrance into her life.
Brethren, your past is past. Focus on your future. Do not be intimidated by false signs of your past. They are nothing more than futile attempts of the wicked to keep you from pressing forward.
Understand that the enemy is afraid of you. He fears your future and therefore fights to keep you in the past.
And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.
This is one unselfish woman; a woman standing as a man in her household.
She was not only keen to be set free. She pleaded for the lives of her entire family, including all that they had.
What gave her the right to ask this of the men? Why did she think that, as a harlot, she could expect such deliverance?
Someone else would have condemned her. Even if they managed to avoid that, they would have condemned her things.
Note that she did not ask for her things to be saved. She also must have determined that the things acquired with the proceeds of harlotry were accursed and unworthy of God’s presence. Therefore, she sought only for the deliverance of her family’s substance, and their lives from death.
And the men answered her, our lives for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.
This is the reality of Christian ministry.
A servant of God must be ready to stake his life for his faithful congregation. When he gives them instructions, and they obey, he must be willing to take personal responsibility for their success and defence in that area.
These men could boldly declare to Rahab, that, if she held her part of the covenant, they would indeed show her kindness; and they staked their lives on it.
And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear. Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring …all thy father’s household, home unto thee.
The true sign they gave her was a scarlet thread. This was a symbol of the blood- the true sign that brought them out of Egypt. This same true token would bring this woman out of destruction.
The same measure she used was also measured back to her. For, the same window through which she let them down was going to be the same window upon which she was to display the true sign.
And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him. And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.
The terms of the covenant were simple.
Stay in the covenant and be saved. Move out of the covenant and be killed.
Violate the terms of the covenant, and it will be voided.
This is a true sign. If you follow a true man of God, and obey his instructions faithfully, then, if any hand should come upon you for harm, that man of God will be held responsible.
And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.
She heard their words, and said AMEN.
Now, Rahab did not know when they would come to take the land. It was therefore wisdom on her part to do what was instructed of her as soon as they left.
Josh 6:16-25
And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the LORD given you the city. And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the LORD: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her. In the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent…
The D-day was here.
Joshua stood and charged the people to take the city. He declared that the whole city shall be accursed, all except Rahab, as well as everyone in her house.
Understand that Joshua did not send the men to Rahab’s house. He did not instruct them to give her a true sign, or rescue her.
Yet, Joshua said the same thing they had said concerning her, confirming the covenant.
The men understood and applied the principles of the kingdom; that whatever follows Joshua- the leader- will follow them as well.
This means that whatever I say to you, by the Spirit of the Lord, will be confirmed by the Lord Jesus.
Remember that Moses did not tell Joshua to command the sun during the battle against the Amalekites. The Bible actually records that such a day has not been repeated, where God hearkened to the voice of man, and caused the sun to stay still. Moses did not experience that, but Joshua, standing on the shoulder of his leadership, did.
Brethren, I pray that you will experience the uncommon display of God in your life, in the name of Jesus.
And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword. But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, go into the harlot’s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her. And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel…
Jesus, in the place of Joshua, sent the men back into the harlot’s house, to bring out, not only the woman and her kindred, but also her belongings.
Remember that she had left out her own property when she sought the true sign from the men. Yet, on that day, her property survived, where gold, silver, cattle, and other lives were destroyed.
While the entire city was judged to be accursed, Rahab’s belongings- got from prostitution- was declared holy, and was saved.
And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
The two spies made the covenant with Rahab. They gave her the true sign. Yet, it is recorded that Joshua saved her.
Brethren, the Lord Jesus will save you; but He needs a man to go into your life and set the true sign there. He needs someone to speak YES to the good, and NO to the evil in your life; and He will endorse his work.
If this happened in the Old Testament, what greater testimony is yours because of the Blood of Jesus.
Your responsibility is to be faithful to the one that He sends; to follow his instructions faithfully, and abide by the terms of the covenant.
